Marianne Alleyene to give September 9 Frontiers Lecture

Marianne AlleyneThe MBM Program will continue its Frontiers in Miniature Brain Machinery lecture series for the Fall 2020 semester with Marianne Alleyene. Alleyene is a Assistant Professor of Entomology and Integrative Biology at the University of Illinois.

Alleyne will speak September 9 at 4pm in Zoom on “Bioinspired Design: Insects Did It First – How Best To Learn From Them.” The lecture is open to the public.

Abstract:

There exist millions of insect species and they can be found in almost every habitat on earth. Their diversity is staggering. Insects and other arthropods have evolved adaptations that, when fundamentally understood, can offer unique solutions to human problems. The Alleyne Bioinspiration Collaborative (ABCLab) studies these adaptive strategies employed by insects with the aim to design innovations through analogizing these strategies. The multi-functionality of the insect cuticle has been of particular interest since it is important for proper locomotor system functioning (beetles), is often superhydrophobic (cicadas and flies), and sometimes even antimicrobial (cicadas). These biological surfaces and cuticular architectures can inspire engineered surfaces that have similar or better multi-functionality. In addition, arthropod-inspired designs may inspire novel sensors (flies and ticks) and decision-making algorithms (honey bees). Using these examples from the ABCLab, I will discuss the Bioinspired Design approaches that result in the most innovative and collaborative multi-disciplinary teams. I’ll discuss how these approaches can be implemented to potentially solve any problem using bioinspired design, and how these designs can, in turn, help us understand biological systems better.

Bio:

Alleyne’s research interests are in using insects as inspiration for new technological innovations. Trained as an insect physiologist, her current research primarily focuses on the material properties of the cuticle and on biomechanics. Additionally, Alleyne has an interest in how best to implement and teach bioinspired design, which involves multi-disciplinary teams and thus requires the de-silo-ing of academic structures. Alleyne has been at the University of Illinois for 20 years, first as a PhD student and PostDoc, then as a research scientist, and since recently as an Assistant Professor in Entomology. Alleyne serves as the Graduate Director for the Online Masters of Science Teaching Biology. She is also a Science Policy Fellow of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) and serves on the Governing Board of ESA.
