The MBM Program continues its Frontiers in Miniature Brain Machinery lecture series with Rhanor Gillette, Emeritus Professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology. He will speak on “Enhancing Complexity in Brain Machinery and Behavior: How and Why?”
The lecture is free and open to the public via Zoom at 4:00pm February 3, 2021.
Bio:
Rhanor Gillette is an Emeritus Professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology. His research topics include computational biology, ion channels, learning and memory, neurobiology, pattern formation, and sensory processing, with disease research interests in neurological and behavioral disorders.
Gillette’s lab aims its research at the ways animals organize their behavior by integrating motivation, experience and sensation, analyzing decision-making in behavioral expression and the underlying neural network circuitry. The lab particularly focuses on marine biology, studying these behaviors in sea slugs and octopuses. The team’s cyberslug simulation explores the function of a basic neuronal circuit for cost-benefit decision, derived from studies of a predatory generalist, the sea-slug Pleurobranchaea californica, and provides a basic module for expansion of behavioral complexity.
Gillette completed his PhD at the University of Toronto, an MS at the University of Hawaii, and BS at the University of Miami.
