Taher Saif to give October 21 Frontiers Lecture

Taher SaifThe MBM Program continues its Frontiers in Miniature Brain Machinery lecture series with Taher Saif. He is a Professor of Mechanical Science & Engineering and Neuroscience at the University of Illinois, and one of the core faculty of the MBM Program.

Saif will speak October 21, 2020 at 4pm in Zoom on “Miniature neuro-machinery with large potentials.” The lecture is open to the public.

Bio:

Taher Saif is a professor of mechanical science and engineering, as well as neuroscience, at the University of Illinois, and the Edward William and Jane Marr Gutgsell Professor at the University of Illinois. His expertise lies in the mechanics of living cells (biomechanics) and nanoscale materials (nanomechanics). The underlying themes that link the two thrusts are the principles of mechanics and the processes that are relevant at small scale. Saif’s research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms that determine those processes.

He earned his BS in civil engineering (structures) at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, his MS in the same major at Washington State University, and his PhD in theoretical and applied mechanics at Cornell University. Before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois, he held faculty positions at Cornell University, the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, and the University of Vienna.

Saif has received multiple honors related to teaching and engineering, including the Engineering Science Medal from the Society of Engineering Science (2020), Warner T. Koiter Medal (2018) from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the UIUC College of Engineering Outstanding Advisors list (2009), and the Xerox Award for Faculty Research (2006). He is a member of the International Advisory Board for North South University, Bangladesh; the Board of Directors for the Society of Engineering Science (President in 2016); Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the Scientific Advisory Board, Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology; and other professional societies/honors.
